The Dad's Army Wikia is a collaborative database of information about the BBC's classic comedy series Dad's Army, which ran on the BBC from 31st July 1968 – 13th November 1977 for 9 series & 3 Christmas specials (80 episodes in total) plus a radio series, a feature film and a stage show. On its inception, reviews for the first series were mixed but the gradually grew to becoming one of Britain's most popular sitcoms, with an regular audience of 18 million viewers. The series remains well-known and still garners popularity today, with a second film and remakes of missing episodes made recently.
Dad's Army was set in the fictional south coast seaside town of Walmington-on-Sea, during the Second World War. Alternating moments of gentle character comedy with broad slapstick, it recounted the misadventures of the local voluntary defence force (or 'Home Guard'), consisting of men who are too old or 'unfit' for military service.
George Mainwaring (pronounced "Man-er-ing", though Captain Square pronounces it as spelled: "Main-waring") was the Bank manager of Walmington-on-Sea. He later became the Captain of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard Platoon...find out more!
