Private Sponge was a sheep farmer from Walmington-on-Sea. He later became a private of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, commanding his own section.

Biography[]

Private Sponge was a local sheep farmer and regular member of the platoon. Sponge was in charge of the number two section of the platoon; Corporal Jones commanded the number one section. Sometimes forgotten by Captain Mainwaring, number two section often took over once Jones' section had finished. Private Sponge was asked to provide a ram from his flock for The Big Parade, but it was the time of year when they were "a bit funny" and very difficult to catch. His farm, on which he lived with his wife, was situated quite close to the town, or at least within a short march.

Notes[]

  • In The Armoured Might of Lance Corporal Jones, Private Sponge was credited as Soldier.
  • This was the first time Sponge was credited, although he had appeared several times in the background before this episode.
  • Since James Beck's passing, Bean's character of Sponge often filled the gap for episodes after Things That Go Bump In The Night.
  • Sponge generally appears to be the main extra in the platoon. In Battle School, he travels in the same carriage as the 'main' members of the platoon (that is, the ones who appeared most prominently in the series; Corporal Jones' section along with Sergeant Wilson and Captain Mainwaring).
